Exploring Portrait Photography

While I enjoy looking at portrait photography, I rarely attempt it myself. Approaching people and asking if they would let me take their portrait feels like a challenge in itself. There is always that hesitation, the fear that I might not capture them in a way they’ll like.

Recently, I had a short portrait session with my friend Hina, and it turned out to be an experience I really enjoyed. We spent a few hours walking around Yokohama, looking for interesting spots to shoot. I mainly used the Fujifilm XF90mm F2, a lens I bought just before the session. By the way, that lens completely exceeded my expectations with its sharpness, beautiful compression, and ability to isolate the subject while still maintaining a natural sense of depth in the background.

As we were shooting, I started to notice what draws me to certain portrait photography compositions. I realized that I love incorporating architecture into my shots, or at least making the surrounding environment just as important as the subject. Rather than simply isolating the subject, I found it more interesting to create a connection between her and the space around her... or at least, I tried.

Instead of talking more, here are some of the images from my portrait session with Hina!
